The first 15 seconds of the clip a non-diegetic sound is being played this background music is old fashioned string and bass this is stereotyping the population of the region that is being portrayed as old, not up to date and uninteresting this also gives the viewers the proper set of mind to what to expect from the ep. Mise en scene, the viewers see the outdoors and older people working in the background, the fact that the first scene is in the outdoors can suggest that the older people tend to spend more time outside in the fresh air than young people who are portrayed to spend more time inside in front of a system. Camera shot used is a dolly track in front of two older men this is too focuses the views attention to the men and listen to what they might be saying.
Next scene of the younger male sweeping suggest that the younger male is given less responsibility than an older male this also shows the structure the region has towards young workers, next a shot reverse shot when the older male enters, says “morning” however his voice is loud and demands attention this shows that the older male is the dominate character is plays a more important role in the work place also he says “all hands on deck” this is normally said by a captain of a ship, the captain is the person in charge, the most important and the person with the most experience by saying this it suggest that the older male sees the younger people in the setting as workers that are not high up in the pyramid. When the older male asks Amy is she can drive she says “of course, passed first time” the older male doesn’t know that she is underage to drive but this shows how immature she is and that she doesn’t look at the danger side of this this is meant to show that she is a teen, then the older male throws the teen the car key by a smooth underarm but the teen catches it with some difficultly this suggest that the older person is much stronger then the teen meaning that In the work place there’s only so much a teen can do. A panning shot is used to show the viewers that the teen is in the car and that she feels uneasy and new to the task of driving a car we can see this in her facial expressions for instance rising her eye brows and biting her lip then a long shot of the car leaving this shows that even though she is underage she can drive maybe by the technology available to teen nowadays for instance driving games.
The crash scene is opened by an establishing shot that shows us that there has been a crash and it’s clear that the car that the headmaster was drive is creating smoke from the hood. The headmaster car is clearly an older model this relates to the headmaster himself as he is old too and his car seems to be a worst state than the other car and so is the driver, the headmaster when coming out of the car seems to be in more pain that Amy. The cars are the drivers innersole in solid state by this I mean that Amy is driving a large land rover that is loud and can survive most events, the older car is old, weaker than the land rover and can survive in a system e.g. city, county side streets ,both cars are like the drivers. When the other rush towards Amy she hides behind the group especially the older male this shows us that she is scared and feels in danger this tells the views that younger people can’t fight for themselves and relying on an older person to protect them. The headmaster says “I’ve been worried sick, when a sixteen year old girl runs away you can’t help but feel the worst” by saying this he believes that a 16 year old cannot not after them self and are not responsible. They three age groups teens, mid-age and elderly, the teens are kept under control by the mid-aged but the mid-aged show respect to the elderly “sorry, just a minute who are you?” also by the hand gestures and in the Mise en scene we see that the teens wear clean and fashionable cloths, the mid-aged wear dirty and un-branded clothes and the headmaster wears old fashioned clothes, clean and smart.
The Mise en scene of the office scene shows us that the office looks very mature and the older male looks out of place due to his age and clothing style. The male offers the headmaster a glass of brandy which is a strong mature drink this relates to the headmaster himself as he is an older man and developed a strong taste for alcohol however this is stereotyping age and gender. The headmaster tell the male that he is responsible to her father that she tries to pass her exams, this tells us that the main reason he has come to visit Amy is because he has made a promise to an adult, this leads to the male being shocked that Amy hasn’t sat any of her exams however the headmaster did say “she’s into the run up to her exams” then the male says “hold on she hasn’t sat any of her exams” this shows us that the male isn’t listening the headmaster and as a mid-aged man jumps to the worst event.
The male quickly opens the door and grabs Amy by the arm taking her away from the elderly women this shows that the male is the most dominant and that compare to the male a teen is weak however gender is key to the elderly woman seems to be clam and gentle and says nothing whist Amy is being shouted at by the male this could show that her age and gender is holding her back from any action. At first Amy tries to use the ‘I’m sorry’ and innocent approach but this changes when the male talks about her father her tone changes this tell us that a teens feelings can change and may not be real but only a tool to get what a teen wants. A shot reverse shot is used for the conversion and it is clear that a low angle is being used at the same time this shows the views who is more powerful and in control about the situation. Also the male is demanding “I want you ready to leave by the time I get back” this shows us that the teen does not have a chose about staying, the teen has an outburst saying “I hate you!” this demonstrations how un stable the teen is emotional and this is ignored by the adult telling us that the child isn’t important and her feelings are not important.
Next there’s a montage of the adults at work, the lack of younger individuals could mean that the task are too difficult and a younger individual would need to be more experience. The music starts to fade when there’s a cut to Amy’s room however a new sound fades in, background music that suits Amy’s feels. Amy’s room does not look like a teens room this could be because the adults would not let her but her bed does have a few teen magazines also this is a stereotype for girls as magazines are there interests also the mirror has been accessorised with pink lights and pictures this shows that the teen needs and realise on family and friends this is highlighted by the camera zoom into the picture. Next the older women comes to comfort Amy again backing up the stereotype of the older women mostly by picking up the child’s teddy bear, calling her name again and again she jumps to the conclusion that might have ran away and starts to run to the more authority adult, Mark.
Next scene we can see both young and old working, we see the teen jumping on the spade this is showing the viewer that a teen in this setting is weak and is out of place. Next we see the older women running towards Mark and she is out of breath because of running to him this shows us that she is old and shock can be deadly to the older people but it does also show us that the older women is much more caring than a younger male because even though running to Mark was causing her pain she still ran to him to tell Mark about the situation. A close up of Mark face shows us his worry as he is responsible of Amy due to her age.
To conclude this clip shows the younger person to be weak and out of control Monarch of the Glen has shown this by Amy and the younger males behaviour such as Amy lying about her age, crashing the car and running away due to an argument and the younger male sweeping the flour and jumping on a spade. And the older male to be much more in control and stronger this was shown by the headmasters langue and clothing and Marks control on Amy and his role in the work place also the camera angle support this.
